Yellow Dog Mine

A photo from the U. S. Steel owned limestone mine in Yellow Dog, Pennsylvania (Shadyside Village).  This photo is from 1919, beyond that I only know the name of one man and the nickname of another.  From left to right the third man kneeling is John Clair Ruffaner, the man standing behind him in bib overhauls was nicked named "Addie".  A copy of the original that belonged to Clair Ruffaner.

  1. The man in the top row on the left could be Joe (Guiseppe) Sallustio, I'm named after him. We went by Sallo in Yellowdog

  2. Wonderful information. Thanks Joe!

I have two other Yellow Dog Photos, I'll try to get the one up loaded. The other is a large panorama so I'll have to scan it in sections.

I hope eventually others might find this and help me identify the men in the pictures. Although at this time it might be too late to find them all unless someone has a copy with all their names.

  3. I'm headed to Yellow Dog tomorrow to visit; I know they have some info on the mine from back in the 1920's.

I'm printing these for my uncle and dad, I'll get back to you if anyone is recognized.

  4. Dear Joe,

I hope that any material of historical value they have will eventually be given to a local historical society for long term preservation - either at the Armstrong County Museum or the Heinz History Center.

Please let me know what you find and what sort of records they have, and how you are able to make use of them.

    Thanks for the help.
    Eric
